Autobend Ltd was established twelve years ago to further expand the muffler manufacturing and wholesale business that had been a division of Magoo Mufflers Ltd since 1981.

Demand for mandrel tube bending on their CNC Addison DB76 machine was not confined to vehicle exhausts so the name “autobend” was chosen to highlight our years of experience in the automotive business and our expertise in bending alloy, stainless and EWS mild steel tube for all industries.

Sales of replacement exhaust systems to trade workshops throughout NZ grew rapidly thanks to very competitive pricing, good quality products, friendly staff who knew their cars and a comprehensive catalogue which included many used import models. New mufflers were designed to meet the changing vehicle fleet on our roads along with a range of big-bore sports systems sold under the ‘Rage’ brand.

Autobend only stock and use quality double skinned aluminised mufflers made to specific designs that are tried and proven in the New Zealand market. Most muffler barrels and some fast moving bolt on units are supplied by Manumatic Industries in Melbourne who have ISO9000 certification and supply original equipment (OE) components for Ford and GM new car plants in Australia.

All staff pride themselves on innovation and customer service so when courier companies refused to carry muffler units over 1.8 metres they redesigned systems as “kit sets” using solid flanges to join parts. Increased demand for quality exhausts saw a move to larger premises in Vulcan Pl where a million dollar 4,000kw laser cutting centre was installed to improve both productivity and product finish.

Laser cutting is very precise (within 0.2mm) and can cut a wide range of sheet materials including 20mm steel, 16m stainless or 10mm alloy. A Rotolas option was also purchased which allows Autobend Ltd to cut round or square tubes such as perforated tube used in race car or truck muffler designs.

 

Automotive header, turbo and joining flanges were catalogued and are now sold ex stock from both Auckland and Christchurch with several popular turbo flanges also available in stainless steel.

 big bore exhausts and headers are often dyno tested during development and continually highlight the benefits of mandrel bent pipes and years of experience in muffler designs.

When Southward Automotive closed in 2006 Autobend purchased their manufacturing jigs and integrated these parts into their Christchurch factory production. Autobend also purchased the plant and finished goods of Southwards distribution warehouse in Auckland which was relocated down the road and now carries the same extensive range as the original Christchurch warehouse.

Replacement exhausts, universal mufflers, headers, big bore, extensions, U Bends, tube, flanges, converters, studs, gaskets, donuts - Autobend stock the lot with products imported from Australia, India, Korea, China, and Italy once stringent quality standards have been approved by Autobend engineers.
